Pretty on the Inside

My work concerns tension in the body. Obsessive tension winds, relieves, then winds tighter. Twisting, spinning, squeezing. Parasitic obsessions grab my stomach to claim me as their host - pulling on my guts, tugging on my viscera. Tension eases for a moment after a ritual is complete, only to wind back up again. A sickly-sweet rhythm that resists resolution:

Repeat until it’s perfect. Repeat until I’m perfect.

I make art intuitively - like a bird makes a nest or an otter makes a dam. My subconscious takes hold as I let go of control and watch my hands create automatic drawings, sculptures, paintings. My automated process produces a self-portrait of sorts - abstract, but honest. My work resists boundaries - floating through media, perpetually changing materials and focus. Pretty on the Inside investigates the body as it relates to the passage of time, beauty standards, and societal sexualization. My bodily experience informs the methods I use to manipulate materials like plaster, epoxy, latex, and nylon. I aim to capture the subconscious feelings of tension through these abstract forms.
